It is our vision to rebuild a vibrant food system that will provide nutritious and culturally appropriate foods for people that need it and to support the economic development of indigenous and local food producers in the Great Lakes region.
The Great Lakes Intertribal Food Coalition and partners are hosting the Indigenous Food Producer Academy at the Forest County Potawatomi Community and Menominee Nation on July 30-31, 2024. All Indigenous producers, community members, and key partners are encouraged to attend. More information and registration will be available soon.
Our goal for the Tribal Elder Food Box Program is to increase access to nutritious, culturally meaningful foods for Tribal members over 55 years old.
Partners purchase foods from Indigenous and non-Indigenous local producers to pack and deliver Elder desired food boxes to Tribal Distribution Sites.
“I am on a fixed income. The food helped reduce my grocery expenses. This allowed me to pay other household expenses. The food boxes definitely had an impact on my monthly budget.”
“Some of the protein items such as whitefish and bison are not available at the grocery store where I do my shopping. The food boxes provided healthy food I would not have access to otherwise. It also added more fresh vegetables to my diet.”
“Excellent! This is a GREAT program! Thank you – Waewaenen! Getting your food box made a huge positive difference for my family & me.”
“Receiving this food from other nations [Tribal producers] was appreciated and made me (as an elder) feel like I was being looked after and loved. It made me feel happy.”
